INGREDIENTS:
1 pound ground beef
1 medium chopped onion
1 can Campbells mushroom soup
OR
1 can beef gravy (or mushroom gravy, the choice is up to you)
vegetables - optional
salt and pepper
garlic
mashed potatoes, fresh or instant
butter
DIRECTIONS:
Brown 1 pound ground beef in a cast iron frying pan, when browned remove from pan and drain fat. add 1 medium chopped onion to pan and cook until translucent, not browned. Return meat to pan. Add 1 can Campbells mushroom soup or 1 can beef gravy (or mushroom gravy, the choice is up to you). If adding vegetables add now season to taste with salt and pepper and garlic if desired.
Remove pan from heat. Top beef mixture with mashed potatoes, fresh or instant Put some butter on top of potatoes, put under broiler until browned Serve with fresh bread and butter, and a tossed salad
This is actually an old English dish originally made with ground mutton by the shepherds. Now it is more commonly made with ground beef. There are many different versions. My grandmother never added vegetables to the ground beef but added mushrooms and mushroom soup. My wife adds frozen mixed vegetables (peas, carrots and lima beans).
Shepherds pie is best made in a cast iron frying pan.
