INGREDIENTS:
1/2 lb. bulk country sausage
1 all-purpose apple, cored, pared and thinly sliced
5 eggs
2 c. Borden or Meadow Gold milk
1/3 c. Cary’s Maple Orchards or MacDonalds pure maple syrup
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/2 (1-pound) loaf French or Italian bread, cut into 1/2-inch slices
Additional Cary’s or MacDonald’s pure maple syrup
DIRECTIONS:
In large skillet, thoroughly cook sausage. Remove sausage from skillet; drain and crumble. Add apple slices to skillet; over medium heat, cook covered 3 minutes. In medium bowl, beat eggs; add milk, 1/3 cup pure maple syrup and nutmeg. Mix well. In buttered 10-inch pie plate, arrange about three-fourths of the bread slices. Top with sausage, apples and remaining bread slices. Pour milk mixture evenly over top. Cover; refrigerate overnight. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 55 to 60 minutes or until set and golden. Serve immediately with additional pure maple syrup. Refrigerate leftovers. Makes one 10-inch pie
